We can tune these vehicles for more power and better fuel economy.
This is a Custom Tune which we adjust to suit each individual vehicle.
With advances in improved software, we can make specific changes for the greatest benefit.
This means that we can adjust fueling as it is required – NOT just adding more fuel pressure across the range like most other chips do.
We can also increase boost levels.
These units are the latest in tuning technology from Germany.
In short it means that our tunes make your engine run more efficiently.
It has more power when you need it and uses less fuel for your driving.

Kaikoura Beach Hop 2014

So Bonita and myself had an early start at 6:00am on the Saturday with my first port of call the workshop to pick up the Harman Motors VE. Once it was loaded we carried on to Amberley to catch up with Chris and his 1971 Chrystler Pacer, Violet and Lex with their VE Commodore “SCARY2” and Paul with his 6L VZ ute. From here it was an easy cruise to Kaikoura. We arrived at the domain just before 9am and could already tell the Hop was going to be bigger and better than any other year. We were quickly ushered in and parked up. It seemed to only take another half hour to fill the remaining two thirds of the domain. The quality of the cars was only second to the atmosphere. Everyone was friendly and the weather was warm. It was great to see so many of our customers showing their cars. The hours flew by and at 3pm the cars started moving off for the cruise. This was quite spectacular with an estimated 1,400-1,500 specialist cars all on the move. The cruise turned into chaos quite quickly with no clear direction. Kaikoura was quite simply over run with hop goers all lapping around very happily.

Whilst Chris wanted an early night and stayed at the cabins, Bonita and I got some fish and chips and went to the drive in movie. This was the first time I had ever been to a drive in and I quite enjoyed the freedom the car gave us to chat as opposed to sitting in a theatre shoulder to shoulder with other movie goers. I think I have found my new favorite way to see movies.

On sunday morning we made our way north of Kaikoura to Hapuku for the first ever “Kaikoura Hop Street Drags” With Chris driving the Harman Motors VE, I gave a hand to relay times to the time keeper. After a couple of runs had been made I tried to talk Lex and Violet into running “SCARY2”. They countered my banter by tossing me the keys and telling me to show them how it was done. I made 2 passes in their car. Their VE has had the typical Harman Motors treatment and I knew it was what I consider to be a “fast car” but it really showed its muscle and more importantly its response over the 1/8th mile street track. After I had made my 2 passes I really wanted to see Violet behind the wheel making a good pass. So after a little persuasive banter from Lex and myself she agreed to give it ago. I handed her the helmet and ran through the staging process and made sure all was ok with the race organizers. Well what happened next was simply quite awesome. Violet staged the car with no burnout and pulled up to the line with a gentle touch. The flag was raised and she launched. The car ran true and I could really hear the cam sing. As it turned out Violet had just made one of the days fastest passes and had indeed posted the highest speed at the end of the 8th. I was so pleased to see one of my cars being used the way I had intended it and giving such joy to the owner. It really was a buzz and gave me much more enjoyment than running the car myself. I really take pride and enjoyment from seeing a car I have tuned being used and driven for pleasure after all we don't build “normal” cars here.

FPV Tickford Club Dyno Day

Saturday 21st June

The Christchurch FPV and Tickford Club came to Harman Motors for their own Dyno Day.
An interesting selection of 10 immaculate cars with a wide range of results on the dyno. The cars included: XR8, GT Supercharged, AuIII TS TE50, XR6 Turbo and Typhoon and a classic favourite XY.
A very friendly group who obviously know each other well and appreciate Fords.
Our Performance Technican, James McMullan, is a Ford owner and was able to talk to us all about what works well when tuning Fords and succeded in entertaining everyone with all the dyno runs.
A steady flow of cars coming on and off the dyno was ensured by our enthusiastic technician, Chris.
We all thoroughly enjoyed the morning and look forward to keeping in touch.

Some of the club members were asking me how to convert rear wheel kilowatts into flywheel kilowatts, which we did at the time, but here are a few more thoughts:

This is always an approximate science but these figures are generally accepted and born out from our testing hundreds of cars on the dyno.
On every car there is a power loss through the drive train of approx 25 - 30%.
So to find flywheel Kilowatts, multiply the Rear Wheel Kilowatt figure by 33%.

Note: Drive train losses are due to a number of factors, including
- Torque converter drag and slippage.
- Pumping action of oils in gearbox and diff.
- The oil pump in the auto transmission.
- Windage of the gears moving through the air.
- Seal drag.
- Rotational inertia of all transmission and diff parts, plus flywheel, driveshaft and axles.
Some kinetic energy is lost as heat energy which is then transferred to the atmosphere (tut tut).
- The differential essentially turns the drive through 90 degrees.
This alone can account for up to 10% power loss.
- Viscosity and condition of trans & diff oils.

Ruapuna Track Day 2014

May 3rd saw our annual customer track day held in conjunction with the Lancia and Fiat club. We had 5 vehicles on the track with a strong showing of utes making up 3. We had Paul with his VZ Ute 6L cammed 300rwkw animal finding the limit of factory brakes and Nigel in his MAFLESS tuned VZ 5.7 ute finding the limit. We had only one Ford out on the track with Stuart driving hard as he always does in his nicely kitted out 5.4 Falcon ute. Michael running his super sleeper M spec 125I convertable BMW as his Shelby Daytona was out of action for the day. I was running the Harman Motors VE and had a blast playing with the level of oversteer I could generate with the 340 odd rwkw it has due to the performance upgrades we have done. One thing that made it all the better was the new brake pads we have been running for the last 6 months. With the installation of EBC Yellow Stuff I was able to run hard for a considerable amount of time and saw many full 5 lap runs with minimal fade only occuring at the end of the day with what was essentually an 8 lap session. This may not sound fantastic but to have a street tuned VE Commodore run down a tuned Porche 911 on a race track you know we are doing something right. In fact the only car I came across for the whole day that could show the VE it's heals was a Radical S3!

The crowds loved the sound of our V8's at the show. Big exhausts, cold air intakes, big cams, great tunes, lumpy idle and an awesome sound.

David Harman and our tuner, James McMullan were at the show with 2 Holdens and a 2010 Camaro. We had a lot of fun.

As usual, heaps of interesting cars. Everyone has their own idea of a dream car and we all appreciate the variety in the show.

Dyno Day 15th Febuary

February 15th was our first dyno day for the year. 8 cars came and most people stayed till well after 12 to watch them all run on the dyno.

The morning was run by David Harman, tuner James and upgrade technician Chris. James gave an impressive demonstration of one of his tuning tricks while Chris kept the morning flowing seamlessly.

We tried to make the morning entertaining, educational and inspiring. At least one of the cars has booked in for upgrade work. Will keep you informed.

"Spring into Oxford"

Sunday the 6th of October I attended the “Spring into Oxford” show. It's a more low key kind of a show with stalls selling crafts and candyfloss along with face painting and llamas. I had taken the bright orange hot cammed V8 Harman Motors 2006 VE SS-V Holden Commodore to what was largely a classic car show. I can tell you it turned some heads - like all of them when I arrived and proceeded to park up on the outer edge of the grass oval.

I had arranged to meet David Harman out there with his 1965 Daimler 2.5. David's Daimler is a true usable classic cruiser with a few historic rallys under it's belt and a modified V8 under it's hood. The bored and stroked original engine has a great rumble to it. The two cars attracted a lot of attention during the superbly sunny day and it was nice to catch up with some of our customers.

Along the street there's the local farmers market. If you're looking for a nice drive and a good day for the family I would suggest heading out to the show next year. Come and say hi and take a closer look at what we have on display.

Alexandra Drags 2013

On the 28th of September Chris (one of our mechanics) and I set off for the Southern Dragways event held in Alexandra along side the Blossom Festival known as “Thunder Sunday”. I picked up the VE from our workshop around 9am and headed to Chris's house to collect him. We set the cruise control and didn't stop till Geraldine for a lunch of Subway. The next stop was Twizel for a bit of unsuccessful fishing in the canals.

As neither I or Chris had pre registered for the racing on Sunday we had an early night so we could be up nice and early to make sure we didn't miss out on the racing. We managed to be among the first at the track and by track I mean Alexandra's air strip. It was good to be there early to meet everyone and get set up. I was first up in the VE. Now for those that aren't familiar with the Harman Motors Holden Commodore SS-V it's a true street weapon with over 340 rear wheel kilowatt or 450 horse power of true hot cam V8 grunt with a manual six speed. Now as this was a air strip and we were not running slicks I knew traction was going to be an issue. What I did not realize was that it was still going to be an issue after the half track marker. The traction might have been low but the enjoyment factor was high. With both Chris and I running in the 13's all day we had a great time. The VE has run a best time of 12.03 with slicks on a prepped track before so you can imagine how much wheel spin we had to contend with. Our VE made twice as many passes as any other car in the field due to the fact we had two drivers But it still never missed a beat when we packed up and drove it back to Christchurch.

Our VE SS V

When we bought our VE SS V, it had a 3" X Force cat back exhaust fitted, but was otherwise standard. On our dyno it had 222 kW at the rear wheels.
